Critiques

  • MODERATOR
    • Facilitator was also suggested
    • Should not lead group
    • Critique should be a conversation – both sides should also listen
    • Some crits allow all work to be looked at without discussion at the beginning
    • Some crits dictate that everyone must present (even the Tutor if present)
    • Some crits are the last stage before work is handed in to the Tutor, who will gather the work up at the end and take the comments into account – however this does not help the student develop the work?
  • PRESENTING WORK
    • Gather your thoughts before hand
    • Saying nothing about the work gets the first and most open reaction but may not answer your questions
    • Stating your intentions and whether the work is finished can be very useful
    • Asking questions can have drawbacks – narrowing feedback – however my experience is that gathering your thoughts into 2 or 3 questions is extremely useful
    • Summarising the comments at the end can help process diverse opinion
    • Pay most attention to the comments you don’t like – learn to take difficult criticism
    • You don’t have to change the work after the crit
  • CRITIQUING WORK
    • Your aim is to help the presenter
    • Try to avoid the technical unless it is relevant to the intentions of the work
    • Be respectful but direct where necessary
    • Review your own comments
    • Look out for useful feedback for your own work (even if you are not presenting) – e.g. references
